The company that maintains the building my office is located at, has already started with Christmas decorations. I cannot be any happier, and yes, I say Christmas, I have yet to meet a person who gets offended by that word, or by wishing them a Merry one. It's November 15th and we already have decorations out for Christmas, skipping Thanksgiving, or what most people refer to as the Christmas prologue. It seems that as time goes by, people begin celebrating, or at least preparing for Christmas at earlier dates. I wouldn't be surprised if one year everyone dresses up in Christmas costumes for Halloween to kick off the "Christmas Season". But what does this tell us? For me, the message is very clear. Setting aside the skeptic commercial approach of "we need to boost retail spending," I believe that people are in a constant pessimistic tone from the media and this holiday brings a much needed relief, the kind of distraction we have been waiting for all year. Debt, politics, "from main street to wall street" statements, local news coverage, sex scandals, 24 hr marriages, reality tv, orange alerts, red alerts, brown alerts, athletes disappointing fans, depressing court cases, ... we are bombarded hourly by news that bring us down and we have come to accept this as "business as usual." Bringing Christmas early seems like the escape we have all been waiting for, whether is a big vacation planned all year long, a nice get together with friends and family, that one office party we've been waiting for, or just to enjoy that feeling of seeing everybody smiling in the streets for no particular reason. Whatever the reason you have to celebrate Christmas early, cherish it and find a way to maintain that feeling all year long. Be happy. Remember we are all part of the 1% ... of the world. Count your blessings and remember those who cannot and will never have what you have today. I don't want you to feel bad for those who don't have, but the least you can do is to be thankful. Show it. Appreciate those around you that make your life what it is. Whether you admit it or not, I believe that this is the true reason why most people are desperate to celebrate Christmas early, and if it's not, think about making it your reason, I promise I will.
